3-22 October 2024: Everest basecamp via Gokyo Lakes with Emma Svensson

Join Emma Svensson on a hiking trip to Nepal where we hike among the world’s highest peaks in the Khumbu valley. We start the journey in Kathmandu and then continue via the unique trail between Lukla to Gokyo and the turquoise lakes at the foot of Cho Oyu, one of the world’s 8000 meter mountains. We then hike on over Cho La Pass and are rewarded with a fantastic view of Ama Dablam, Lobuche and Cholatse. The magnificent scenery will take your breath away. We continue upwards and towards Kala Pathar and Everest Basecamp before descending via the normal Everest trail to Namche Bazaar, the main village in the Khumbu and further back to Lukla and Kathmandu. We will take you to famous places and hidden gems.

Along the way we also climb two 5000 meter peaks: Kala Pathar 5644 m and Gokyo Ri 5357 m.

Nepal is a favorite place for Emma Svensson, who leads the trip, together with local certified guides. You are around the world’s highest peaks and it is grand and powerful on a completely different level than anything else. But above all, it is a special experience to travel in a country where everyone welcomes you with great kindness and humility.

We hike a few hours per day and the trip is suitable for anyone in good health with average fitness who wants to experience one of the coolest places in the world and have a big adventure.

We live in lodges with a simpler standard where all food is included.

Before departure

Digital meeting before the trip. The date will be announced at a later date.

Day 1

You arrive in Kathmandu and are picked up at the airport. After about a 45-minute drive, you will arrive at your hotel, near Thamel, the most vibrant district of Kathmandu. Here the outdoor shops are crowded with restaurants, tourist shops and local businesses. We have a welcome meeting and a welcome dinner (included).

Day 2

Free half day in Kathmandu. You will probably have some jet lag from the trip and we want you to be able to rest a little before we travel on to feel better during the acclimatization. So today you have the opportunity to discover Kathmandu on your own, do errands and make purchases if there is something you need to supplement with. Or just have a massage at the local spa.

In the afternoon we have local transport to Ramechhap where we stay in a hotel.

Day 3

We travel on to Lukla by domestic flight from Ramechhap and in the small mountain village we have lunch and then start our trek to Phakding which is today’s goal. On the way to Lukla you will see the Himalayas for the first time and it is more powerful than you can imagine.

Phakding 2600 m
Hiking: 7-8 km
Uphill: 300 m
Downhill: 500 m
Time: 3 hours

Day 4

If yesterday’s hike was a warm-up, this day will be one of the tougher ones as we hike on to Namche Bazaar, which is the main village in the Khumbu valley. Today, for the first time, we will see really mighty mountains and we will officially enter the Sagarmatha National Park. We will also pass the high Himalayan bridges over the valleys. Something that can tickle the stomach but usually works well even for those who are a little afraid of heights. Along the way, there will be extra many photo stops to take nice pictures.

Namche Bazaar 3400 m
Hiking: 10 km
Uphill: 1200 m
Downhill: 400 m
Time: 6-7 hours

Day 5

Today we have a free day in Namche Bazaar to rest and acclimatize. We do an easy walk to Everest View Point. From here you have a nice view of mountains like Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Ama Dablam. Anyone who wants can also return here at sunset and photograph the starry sky.

Day 6

We hike on to Dole and today the trail is sometimes easy with a nice view of Everest and Ama Dablam and sometimes a little tougher. We have lunch in Mongla where we have a fantastic view.

Dole 4050 m
Hiking: 12 km
Uphill: 1000 m
Downhill: 600 m
Time: 6 hours

Day 7

We hike to Machermo and along easy trails. Today is a calmer and shorter day. In the background, Cho Oyu, an 8,000 meter mountain will rise to its throne.

Machermo 4400 m
Hiking: 5 km
Uphill: 400 m
Downhill: 100 m
Time: 3 hours

Day 8

Today awaits one of the highlights of the trip when we reach the turquoise lakes and Gokyo. The hike is easy but now we are almost at 5000 meters so it will feel like the air is thin.

Gokyo 4750 m
Hiking: 7 km
Uphill: 450 m
Downhill: 100 m
Time: 4 hours

Day 9

Today we make an excursion to Gokyo Lake IV & V – it’s a shorter hike but with completely unique views that many others miss. Here you get fantastic pictures of Everest!

Gokyo Lakes IV & V
Hiking: 6 km + 6 km
Uphill: 300 m
Downhill: 300 m
Time: 4-5 hours

Day 10

The day begins with a summit ascent of Gokyo Ri 5357 m. We aim to stand on the summit at sunrise – it doesn’t get more powerful than that. Then after lunch we hike on to Dragnag where we spend the night. The road goes over a dry glacier that looks like the moon.

Gokyo Ri 5357 m + Dragnag 4700 m
Hiking: 2 km + 4 km
Uphill: 600 m + 100 m
Downhill: 600 m + 150 m
Time: 4 hours + 3 hours

Day 11

We make an early start because today awaits the most demanding hike of the trip: We will go over the Cho La Pass. An exciting hike over a mountain pass with an easy climb (with a cable to hold onto) and then down onto a glacier. It will be quite steep uphill for the first half of today’s hike and then gently downhill for the second half. We will be rewarded with a fantastic view of Ama Dablam.

Dzongla 4700 m
Hiking: 8 km
Uphill: 800 m
Downhill: 600 m
Time: 8-10 hours

Day 12

We continue with an easy hike to Lobuche. Here we connect to the Everest-Jiri trail, which is the normal route to Everest Basecamp. There will be more traffic and more life on this trail than the quieter trail to Gokyo.

Lobuche 4900 m
Hiking: 7 km
Uphill: 250 m
Downhill: 150 m
Time: 3-4 hours

Day 13

Today’s trek leads us to Gorak Shep, the last village before Everest base camp and it goes smoothly up and down through a lunar landscape and then on to Everest base camp. Here on the glacier, a base camp is built every spring season with thousands of tents. Here all mountaineers begin their climb through the Khumbu Icefall – one of the most dangerous passages on the way to the summit of Everest. Like a maze of glacial crevasses and seracs, ready to fall at any moment. We then hike back to Gorak Shep where we spend the night.

Everest Basecamp 5300 m ö h + Gorak Shep 5100 m
Hiking: 12 km
Uphill: 600 m
Downhill: 300 m
Time: 5-6 hours

Day 14

We start the day with a summit ascent of Kala Pathar 5644 m at sunrise and then continue down to Dingbouche where we spend the night at a slightly lower altitude. On the way we pass the Climbers Memorial where fallen climbers are honored. For those who have seen the movie Everest, you will find both Rob Hall and Scott Fisher’s memorials here.

Kala Pathar 5644 m + Dingbouche 4410 m
Hiking: 2 km + 12 km
Uphill: 400 m + 150 m
Downhill: 400 m + 1000 m
Time: 4 hours + 4 hours

Day 15

We hike further down to Tengboche. Here you will find a temple where you will most likely be welcome to participate in the evening’s ritual. An unforgettable experience nonetheless.

Tengboche 3860 m
Hiking: 11 km
Uphill: 300 m
Downhill: 800 m
Time: 5 hours

Day 16

We make our way back to Namche Bazaar and it’s only a couple of hours hike so you’ll have plenty of time to go to the spa or the Irish pub. It will feel like you are back in civilization again.

Namche Bazaar 3400 m
Hiking: 10 km
Uphill: 500 m
Downhill: 1000 m
Time: 5 hours

Day 17

Today’s trek back to Lukla is long but it will be so worth it when you sit down in the lodge and order a Daal Bhat for dinner. During today’s hike, you will have the chance to enjoy one last time the mighty view around you. Here in Lukla the trip ends and you then continue back to Kathmandu on your own together with one of the local guides.

Lukla 2800 m
Hiking: 18 km
Uphill: 900 m
Downhill: 1500 m
Time: 7 hours

Day 18

You travel back to Kathmandu together with your local guide. Once in the city, you check into your hotel and can relax. You made it!

Day 19

Free day in Kathmandu. It is always good to have a day off in Kathmandu when you come back to be able to rest properly before the journey home. This day may also be needed if the weather is not good in Lukla and you need to postpone the journey home by a day.

Day 20

Time to travel home. You will be transported to the airport and even if you are tired, you will leave Nepal with a smile on your face and longing to come back.

Good to know

The hike can sometimes feel tough because of the altitude. To join the trip, you need to be able to walk a couple of hours a day for three weeks. But we always have a easier hike or rest day after a tougher day. It should be manageable for a regular person. You can be a beginner. The trip is adapted for an ordinary person who has normal good health and fitness. Sometimes the trails can be a bit rocky so good balance is also good.

We will walk at a good pace for the whole group as we hike and stop often to photograph/take in the environment and the view.

We will be at a high altitude, which will affect us. We have a good acclimatization plan and will advance upwards at a reasonable pace so that you can feel well enough in the meantime. It is common to experience symptoms such as headache, nausea, difficulty sleeping and loss of appetite before the body has had time to get used to the altitude.

We will be responsive and make daily follow-ups of the group’s well-being. We will also measure pulse and oxygen content in the blood to be able to follow how we acclimatise. Walking slowly and not exerting yourself too hard is important, as well as drinking plenty of water and eating regularly to help the body’s acclimatization process.

Please consult your doctor before departure if you are considering taking Diamox. We will bring Diamox and Dexamethasone for emergencies. You also need to have insurance that covers helicopter evacuation if needed.

Your porter

You will be helped to carry 15 kg of your porter. You pack this in a duffel bag that you get access to in every lodge. However, you will not have access to this bag during our hike. You hike with a day backpack with what you need during the day.

We stay in lodges along the way in the Khumbu Valley and they are not insulated so it can get a bit chilly at night. The higher up we get, the colder it tends to be, so we recommend that you bring a sleeping bag in addition to the quilts and blankets that you have access to in the lodges.

The higher up in the Khumbu Valley we go, the simpler the standard at the lodges. At the beginning of the hike there are normal toilets, but higher up there are so-called squat toilets. Toilet paper is not included, so you have to buy your own in the lodges.

In the dining room, they usually light a fire in the stove in the evenings so you can warm up before going to bed. If you are extra frozen, you can buy hot water for your water bottle and keep it in your sleeping bag. Then a plastic Nalgene bottle with a wide opening is recommended.

It is possible to shower in the lodges, but it is not always completely hot. There are simple showers and sometimes a ”bucket shower”. You can also wash your clothes by hand (preferably on rest days or the days we arrive early at a lodge so they have time to dry).

It is possible to buy charging for your mobile phone and camera in the lodges, but it is not possible to charge a laptop, so do not bring one to the Khumbu Valley.

There is decently functioning wifi in most lodges, but if the weather is bad, it works less well.

Earplugs are recommended at night as it is noisy in the lodges with thin walls.

  • Hiking shoes / boots (the day we cross over Cho La Pass we start early and it will be colder)
