Itinerary

Before the Trip

Digital meeting where we go through equipment and planning. A chance to ask questions and meet all participants online a few weeks before the trip. A link will be sent well in advance.

Day 1

You arrive in Arusha and check in at your hotel. In the evening, we’ll have a welcome meeting and an optional group dinner at a local restaurant for those who wish. There is also an opportunity for last-minute purchases during the day. Now the adventure begins!

🏨 Accommodation: Hotel, shared double room with breakfast

Day 2

The day begins with meeting your guide in Arusha or Moshi before heading to Londorosi Gate. After completing the necessary registration formalities at Lemosho National Park gate, we begin our hike along a beautiful and easy trail through lush rainforest.

Along the way, we enjoy a lunch break in a forest clearing before continuing uphill to our first camp, Lemosho Forest Camp (2,650 m). This area is rich in wildlife, and if we’re lucky, we may spot buffalo and other animals. For our safety, we are accompanied by an armed park ranger.

⏳ Hiking time: 2–3 hours
🏕️ Camp: Lemosho Forest Camp

Day 3

We soon leave the forest behind and enter the moorland, where the gnarled trees create a magical atmosphere. The trail steadily climbs and rewards us with sweeping views as we approach the edge of the Shira Plateau. Here, a true sense of wilderness sets in, especially as afternoon mist slowly drifts across the landscape.

Along the way, we may summit Shira Cathedral, an impressive rock formation with dramatic spires. We then continue to Shira Cave (3,720 m), our next camp. This campsite offers some of Kilimanjaro’s most spectacular views – the glacier-covered Kibo Peak dominates the horizon, framed by the jagged edges of the Shira Plateau. To top it off, Mount Meru looms above the clouds, creating a sight we will never forget.

⏳ Hiking time: 6–8 hours
🏕️ Camp: Shira Camp

Day 4

After a good night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast, we continue to Shira 2 Camp (3,840 m). The trail takes us further across the plateau, opening up spectacular views of Kilimanjaro’s majestic peaks.

The terrain becomes more open and rocky, leaving behind denser vegetation. Along the way, we may spot evidence of the volcanic activity that shaped this region, a fascinating experience in this unique highland landscape.

Shira 2 Camp lies in a wide valley with stunning views of the Kibo massif. Here, we start to feel the effects of altitude, so we take it slow and let our bodies adjust. In the evening, we can enjoy the sunset behind Mount Meru – a magical end to the day.

⏳ Hiking time: ~3 hours
🏕️ Camp: Shira 2 Camp

Day 5

We start the morning with a gradual ascent, leaving the moorland behind and entering a more dramatic landscape of lava ridges and rocky slopes. With every step, the panoramic views open up – behind us stretches the Shira Plateau as we approach the impressive glaciers of the Western Breach.

The day’s high point is Lava Tower (4,500 m), where we pause for lunch. This area is often called “Shark’s Tooth” due to its sharp, rugged profile. Here, we get an important opportunity to acclimatize before beginning our descent.

After lunch, we descend steeply to the spectacular Great Barranco Valley (3,950 m), a lush oasis surrounded by dramatic cliffs. Here, unique high-altitude plants like giant lobelias and senecios flourish. Our camp is in a sheltered valley with wide views of the plains below and the Barranco Wall looming above – tomorrow’s first challenge.

⏳ Hiking time: 5–7 hours
🏕️ Camp: Barranco Camp

Day 6

The day begins with an exciting and steep climb up the famous Barranco Wall – one of Kilimanjaro’s most memorable sections. Although it looks imposing, it is non-technical, and we climb at a steady pace using hands and feet on some sections. Reaching the top rewards us with spectacular views of Kibo and the glistening Southern Icefields.

From there, we follow a rolling trail along Kilimanjaro’s southeast flank through a rugged but magnificent landscape, sometimes spotting iconic giant lobelias standing like guardians.

We enjoy a well-earned lunch at Karanga, the last water point before the summit push. Here, we rest and take in the surroundings before the short hike to our camp for the night – Karanga Camp (3,995 m).

⏳ Hiking time: 3–5 hours
🏕️ Camp: Karanga Camp

Day 7

We leave Karanga behind and begin our ascent to Barafu Camp. The terrain changes dramatically to a barren and rocky landscape where only the hardiest plants survive. The trail steepens, and loose gravel requires steady footing and focus.

By midday, we reach Barafu Camp (4,667 m), a windswept location with breathtaking views of Mawenzi and the plains below. We then continue a bit further to Kosovo Camp (4,850 m), a higher and more secluded camp. Staying here shortens the summit night by about an hour, giving us a strategic advantage for the upcoming challenge.

The rest of the day is spent resting and preparing for summit night. We check equipment, refuel with an early dinner, and try to get a few hours of sleep before the final push to Uhuru Peak. From Kosovo Camp, we often enjoy spectacular views of Kilimanjaro and the starlit sky above.

⏳ Hiking time: 3–5 hours
🏕️ Camp: Kosovo Camp (4,850 m)

Day 8

Summit night – Africa’s highest point!

At midnight, we rise, dress warmly, and gather our energy for the big challenge. Using headlamps as our only light, we start the slow, methodical ascent. The trail zigzags steeply up loose volcanic ash, progressing in steady rhythm.

After about 5–6 hours, we reach Stella Point (5,735 m) just in time for sunrise. A short pause allows us to admire the magical moment as the sun paints the sky pink and orange over Mawenzi’s dramatic silhouette.

For those still with energy, the final challenge awaits – a roughly two-hour round trip along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,896 m), Africa’s highest point! On the way, we pass near spectacular glaciers and ice formations still adorning the summit. Standing on “the Roof of Africa” is an indescribable feeling – a reward for all the hours of hard work and determination.

After celebrating and taking photos, we descend quickly but safely back to Kosovo Camp. A short break allows for recovery before continuing down to Millennium Camp (3,950 m) for our last night on the mountain. Surrounded by greenery and with oxygen returning to our lungs, we reflect on the day’s incredible experiences.

⏳ Hiking time: 11–15 hours
🏔️ Highest point: Uhuru Peak (5,896 m)
🏕️ Last camp: Millennium Camp (3,950 m)

Day 9

After a night of well-deserved rest at Millennium Camp, we tackle the final stage of the expedition. We leave the rugged highland behind and descend through lush rainforest. The trail winds through dense greenery, and the fresh air and bird songs make the descent a pleasant experience.

After about 4–6 hours of hiking, we reach Mweka Gate (1,650 m), where we officially conclude our Kilimanjaro adventure. Transfer vehicles take us back to Arusha to celebrate our achievement, enjoy a shower, good food, and perhaps a refreshing drink.

Day 10

Departure day. Check out from the hotel at 10:00 and continue your journey independently, carrying memories for a lifetime.
