Kebnekaise – climb the highest mountain in Sweden

Kebnekaise – climb the highest mountain in Sweden

Climbing Kebnekaise, Sweden’s highest mountain, is a dream for many hikers and mountaineers. At 2,096.8 meters above sea level (2021 measurement), Kebnekaise offers stunning views and a challenging but rewarding experience. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or a beginner looking to take on a bigger challenge, this is an adventure you won’t soon forget.

Which route should you choose?

There are two main routes up to Kebnekaise’s southern peak:

The Western route – The most common and popular route. It’s about 18 km round trip from Kebnekaise Mountain Station and involves a long day trip of about 10–14 hours. The route goes through mountain terrain, over rocky sections and steep slopes. No climbing skills are required, but good fitness and endurance are an advantage.

Eastern Trail – A more technical and demanding route that involves easier climbing using fixed ropes and crampons on the glacier. A guide is recommended for this trail, especially if you are new to alpine terrain.

When is the best time to climb Kebnekaise?

The best time to climb Kebnekaise is from late June to early September. During this period, the weather is usually more stable, and the snow has melted away from the trail. Early in the season, however, snow can still be found at higher altitudes, making crampons and an ice axe necessary.

Preparation and equipment

Climbing Kebnekaise requires planning and the right equipment. Here are some important things to consider:

Fitness and endurance – A long day hike of up to 14 hours requires good physical preparation.

Clothing for all weathers – Mountain weather can change quickly. The layer-by-layer principle works best.

Good shoes – Sturdy hiking boots are a must to cope with rocky and sometimes slippery terrain.

Food and water – Bring enough energy in the form of snacks and a thermos of hot drinks.

Map, compass and GPS – The weather can deteriorate quickly, and it is important to be able to navigate correctly.

Kebnekaise Mountain Station – Perfect base for your trip

Most people who climb Kebnekaise start from Kebnekaise Mountain Station, which is about 19 km from Nikkaluokta. You can hike or take a boat trip across Lake Ladtjojaure to save a few kilometers. The mountain station has accommodation, a restaurant and the possibility of booking guided tours.

Things to consider during the trip

Start early to have plenty of daylight.

Keep an eye on the weather – in uncertain conditions it is better to turn around.

Leave a message about your route and expected return time.

Respect the mountains and nature – leave no trace behind you.
