Join a ski touring course in Sälen. This course is for beginners who have never tried ski touring before, or for those who may have done a tour on their own but want to learn more and start building the skills to go on tours independently in the future. We won’t be doing any advanced descents – if you can ski blue/red slopes, this course will be a good fit! You also don’t need any previous off-piste experience. This is a gentle-level course where the focus is on helping you feel more comfortable and learning new skills. We will ascend at a relaxed pace, with the goal of enjoying the tours. If you are looking for something more extreme, this might not be the right course for you.

You will also learn how to plan your own tours and gain basic avalanche knowledge, including companion rescue.

Being able to head out on skis in nature is absolutely fantastic – an incredible sense of freedom. It allows you to leave the hustle and bustle of the ski slopes behind and enjoy the calm and silence of the mountains.

In this course, you will learn about avalanche awareness, tour planning, navigation, uphill techniques, as well as route choices and terrain, so that you can start going on easier tours on your own afterwards.

Itinerary

Online meeting with avalanche awareness
Date & link will be sent out a couple of weeks in advance.

Day 1
We meet in Sälen and start the day with coffee & introductions before heading out into the mountains. Here you will learn how the equipment works, techniques for going uphill and skiing downhill. There will be plenty of time for questions. The goal of the day is for you to feel confident with your equipment and understand how it functions. We will also practice avalanche transceiver searches. A short tour in the local area is included.

Day 2
We begin the day with an hour or so of theory focusing on tour planning. After that, we head out on a longer tour. Along the way we look at route choices, both uphill and downhill, as well as terrain features, and discuss as a group why we make the decisions we do. The aim is for participants to understand how to plan and carry out a tour, both in advance and in the field.

Day 3
Today we do a beautiful tour that the participants help plan. Which peak we choose will depend on weather and conditions – a surprise, in other words! Participants also take part in route choices and track setting during the tour. The goal is that by the end of the day you feel confident enough to go on a simple tour on your own. We wrap up the day around 15:00–16:00, giving you time to travel home the same evening.

Please note: The program may be adjusted depending on weather conditions.

Prerequisites

You don’t need any previous experience in ski touring or off-piste skiing. This is a beginner-friendly course. If you can ski blue/red slopes, that’s sufficient – we won’t be skiing anything steeper than that. You should also have a reasonable level of fitness to be able to spend about 4–6 hours on a tour at a relaxed pace with a light backpack.
